SOUTH Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has defended the regular meetings between the state and federal governments describing them as the venue of substantial achievements.
Mr Weatherill said the level of co-operation through the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meetings was very strong and a standout on a global scale.
He also dismissed criticism of COAG from Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu as just a partisan political comment.
"COAG has achieved lots of important things," Mr Weatherill told reporters in Adelaide on Wednesday.
"And despite the whingeing of the Liberal premiers we walk out of there generally with some very substantial achievements.
"People always want to exaggerate differences because it suits their political purposes.
"But the truth is a lot of sensible joint planning is done at COAG."
Mr Baillieu said the federal government had not respected the COAG process.
"I've been incredibly disappointed with the way COAG is conducted," he said on Tuesday.
"The Commonwealth call the shots when it comes to COAG.
"Anybody who has had the experience of sitting in on a COAG would end up being very frustrated."
The next COAG meeting will be held in Canberra on Friday.
