THERE will be more bare backsides and risk of infection in Queensland's public hospitals under the Newman government's cost-cutting drive, a union warns.
Queensland's public sector union Together says the state government last week began axing patient pyjama services at public health facilities.
Health Minister Lawrence Springborg has previously said the move will reduce costs and bring Queensland in line with other states.
Together assistant secretary Julie Bignell says diseases will be spread more easily because patients will have to make their own arrangements or wear multi-purpose, open-back surgical gowns.
"The elderly in particular will suffer from this decision, having to rely upon family being available (to wash their pyjamas)," she said in a statement.
"It also raises questions about who decides when pyjamas will be changed.
"Will patients be given a choice of staying in their dirty pyjamas if they don't want to wear a surgical gown?"
Ms Bignell says patients embarrassed to wear the open gowns will be forced to stay in bed.
"In these days of multi-gender wards, who wants to be traipsing around in an open-backed gown?" she said.
Comment has been sought from Mr Springborg.
