Australia wishes Hillary Clinton well

AUSTRALIA will wish the ailing US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton well as she approaches her final weeks in the top job.

Clinton was admitted to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday following the discovery of a clot in a vein situated in the space between her brain and the skull behind her right ear.

She is being treated with blood thinners to dissolve the clot and will be released once the medication takes effect.

Doctors are confident she will make a full recovery.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr will wish her well as she is expected to step down from the top job in coming weeks in a decision made before her illness.

"I'm about to write a letter to her that I hope can reach her within the days," Senator Carr told reporters on Tuesday in Sydney.

"Saying how much we value our work with her and how sincerely we extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

"I'm amazed when I hear accounts of her travel, of countries visited that a US secretary of state has never been to before."

"She's been a perfect diplomatic partner for Australia."

Former presidential candidate Senator John Kerry is expected to replace Mrs Clinton once he is confirmed by the Senate.
