Vic cops wary of heat as crackdown looms

POLICE are urging Victorians not to drink to excess on the weekend, when a police crackdown on drug and alcohol offences will coincide with sweltering temperatures.

Police across Australia and New Zealand will be out in force on Friday and Saturday night, targeting licensing offences and late-night crime in an effort to reduce harm from binge drinking and drug taking.

Victorian police will saturate high-risk hot spots including the Melbourne CBD and Southbank, Prahran, St Kilda, Dandenong, Frankston and Traralgon on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sniffer dogs, foot patrols, water and transit police will monitor streets, roads, rivers and public transport, as well as inside licensed venues.

With the mercury set to reach the high 30s in Melbourne on Saturday, Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius says police will be ready for the bad behaviour which traditionally comes on hot days.

"We want the culture of binge drinking to change," he told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.

"Particularly in Melbourne this Saturday, where it's going to be 37 degrees.

"We really want to send a strong message to people that we'll be out there to keep them safe, but we want them to do the right thing."

An extra 580 police will be rostered on across the city on both nights, he said.
