Sydney pie workers want pay rise

MORE than 100 workers at a western Sydney pie factory have walked off the job as they demand a pay rise.

Sargent's Pies, which accounts for about half of Sydney's meat pie market, had its production halted on Monday after employees formed a picket line outside its factory in Colyton.

Mark Ptolemy, NSW spokesman for the National Union of Workers (NUW), says the industrial action was launched after Sargent's Pies refused to meet the employees' demands for a 99 cent per hour pay rise.

"The company have said they're not going to go above three per cent, but we're asking for six per cent," Mr Ptolemy told AAP.

"That equates to a 99 cent addition to their current hourly rate of $16 per hour, which they've been on for many years."

Mr Ptolemy said it was heartening to see so many workers taking part in Monday's protected action.

"They're very staunch and they're not going to back down.

"They've been getting ripped off for far too long, and they simply can't afford not to get a six per cent increase."

Workers would renew industrial action in the new year if the company did not "come to the table ... (and) bargain in good faith", Mr Ptolemy said.

A spokesperson for Sargent's Pies told AAP the company would not comment.
