Records tumble during spring heatwave: BoM

EIGHTEEN weather stations in south-eastern Australia recorded their hottest November days on record last week as the country sweltered through one of its most significant spring heatwaves.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) people better get used to it - they'll become more common as a result of climate change.

The BoM on Tuesday issued a special climate statement saying the event started with a build-up of extreme heat in central Australia over the weekend of November 24 and 25.

The very hot air mass was drawn to the southeast with the heatwave reaching peak intensity on Thursday, November 29.

Extreme heat covered much of Victoria, inland NSW and northern and eastern South Australia, while the abnormally hot weather also spread to Tasmania.

"Eighteen long-term stations in Victoria, NSW and South Australia had their hottest November days on record," the BoM statement said.

"Overall, it was the hottest November day on record over 33.8 per cent of Victoria, 10.4 per cent of NSW and 1.2 per cent of South Australia."

Records were broken by as much as 1.8C at Balranald in NSW and Ouyen in Victoria.

It reached 45.8C at Ouyen, the state's highest spring temperature on record, easily surpassing the previous record of 44.5C set at Mildura in 1980.

The highest temperature of the heatwave was 46.2C at Pooncarie in NSW.

The bureau's NSW climate services centre manager, Aaron Coutts-Smith, says you can't link any one event to global warming.

"(But) in terms of climate change and the longer-term outlook - over decades - we do expect to see more of these types of events," he told AAP.

"We've seen increasing temperatures; we've measured those across Australia and the globe, so this particular event was made just that little bit worse and that little bit more intense."

Mr Coutts-Smith said the last time there'd been such a widespread and intense heatwave was in November 2009.

That event itself broke many records "and really is the only reason this particular event didn't break more".
